Life is change, change is painful, here @Droidnewsnet

by Robert N. Lee on February 3, 2010 | Comments

So things have obviously been a little chaotic, here, with features announced and dropped and whatnot. In a nutshell, Brennan has gotten too busy to continue working on the site, he’s going to be leaving.

So I face a decision this week about whether or not I want to carry Droid News Net myself, and – to be honest – spent the last day thinking “No. I’m done.” And I woke up this morning thinking that was probably the best thing to do, that I had other priorities to focus on right now, and hey, I’d have all this free time for…whatever.

And then after avoiding the laptop and phone and not diving in there right away, as per my normal wakeup routine, I sat down, finally, to check email and talk to a couple of people, and you know what? It turns out I’m still crazy about Android phones.

So I’m going to take a couple of days, here, to figure out what I want to do and how I’m going to do it – if it’s just going to be me, the site’s going to be scaled back, clearly. And…I hate to be all “If you believe in fairies, clap your hands” but if you read Droid News Net regularly and get some value out of it, you might want to let me know. It will influence the decision to carry on or not, which I am kinda making in a vacuum, otherwise.

Anyway, Brennan’s been great to work with, and however this goes, it was a pleasure, Mr. McEachran. If I do decide to turn out the lights at DNN, thanks to Chris Schneider for his articles and tech advice, thanks to Nicole Cozma for occasional hand holding and general support, thanks to the readers who became regulars and some friends, even, big thanks to dawn patrol tweeps, and everybody else who made doing this a hell of a lot of fun while it lasted.

Yrs.,

I've been designing software and services for almost twenty years and done traditional design and illustration longer. I also write and publish fantasy and horror fiction, criticism, and a lot lately about Android phones. Do You Want To Know More?

  • You must keep this thing going. You are my MAIN source for everything ANDROID! I really enjoy your posts, and I hope that you keep everything running. Maybe you could get a few other bloggers to join you in your task of keeping ME up-to-date with Google and the like. Thanks for everything!

Damn I just found your site a week ago and this is happening! I am a self employed Advertising Designer/Stay at home Father with WAY to much time to himself, so if you ever need any help just let me know. I would hate to see something as fruitful as this fall apart.
  • droidnewsnet
I don't think it will, just sort of regrouping, here. And thanks for the
offer - gotta figure where things go from here, exactly, first. Send an
email or something, though, if you're interested in working on the site.

Sounds like a plan. Whatever you need me for I am up for it since I don't
hit the hay until 3 or 4am and wake up until 8 or 9am. I've had insomnia
since I was a kid so time is on my side.

Chopping wood is sometimes its own reward!
  • droidnewsnet
    Almost always, really.

Why don't you consider advertising, on this site of course, for someone to give you a hand. I'm a web tester by profession and would be happy to test the odd new feature applied to the site if it didn't take up too much time on top of my full time job. I'm sure that you'd get loads of people interested. Just a thought!!! BTW I'm a UK reader and discovered the site via the chrome extension which is great and I only really use this site and phandroid for my android news fixes.
  • robertnlee
No problem - and we never thought about using readers for beta testers, really, primarily b/c it wasn't necessary. None of us has a lack of folks to ask quickly if they want to test new stuff. It's something to consider in the future, however.

    And yeah, B's extension rocks.
  • Thanks for the compliment on the chrome extension!! :)

I would miss this site very much, especially your way of peeling the pr-crud off of the reporting we read otherwise. I read the site whenever something new comes up and its part of my daily routine.

Maybe you could make it a blog instead?

If its fun, do it, otherwise do something else you think is fun. Life is all to short to be doing stuff you dont want to in your spare time.
  • robertnlee
Thanks, for the encouragement both ways - yeah, I've had to step back this week and look at where my time and energy's going and if I could maybe budget better. Changes will be happening, but I'm leaning toward keeping this thing going, one way or another.
  • Orlando
I can understand you have to do what's best for you, but your site would definitely be missed. It's a very intriguing site and viewpoint on the android world. Good luck on your decision and you're supported either way. Just remember, you have readers that will definitely miss your content.
  • robertnlee
Thanks man, and you were one of the people I was thinking about, thanking late night tweeps.
  • Len
I like this place. It's one of only two Android-specific feeds I read. So please, keep working, but if you're scaling back, might I highly suggest getting back to the root of DroidNewsNet: Droid News.

Far too often in the past few weeks this site has spent a great amount of time fighting the good fight rather than reporting on it. There are douchebags out there who are going to trashtalk their competitors no matter what they're doing, be it playing chess, running a race, or talking about electronics.

Rise above it and get your journalistic integrity on.
  • robertnlee
    Wise counsel, and thanks.
  • Micah
I probably check this site every other day or so. I like this site because you have no problem calling bullshit on people.
  • robertnlee
Aw, thanks. We get a lot of crap about some of those pieces, so it's nice to hear a kind word.
  • It might not go guys... I just have to leave for a bit. If the readers want... Robert might keep trucking. Robert has been amazing to work with and is probably the most dedicated person I know! One day I hope to share the same work ethic!
  • robertnlee
    Oh, gawrsh.

Everybody who responded, thanks. I'm down with my back out for the rest of today (went out yesterday), and not on the computer a lot. I'll get some more news on where the site's going up when I can sit up more.
  • Atomicfrog
Awwww, I just installed this extension because I wanted to make my Android / Chrome experience more synch'd up.
  • robertnlee
Well, it looks like things will keep going, so we won't make you sorry just yet.
  • Arnold
I really like your site, too bad if it closed ! A french reader
  • robertnlee
Thanks, Arnold, and looks like things will continue, somehow. Cool to hear from you, too - we've made some efforts toward making this site not North America-centric, would like to do more, and readers elsewhere - Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Arab world, etc., mean a lot.
