Bump Pay lets you tap a friend for cash

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News

Taking cues from an ING Direct app that used its API, Bump Technologies has developed its own version of the mobile payments software, enabling phone-to-phone “Bump” transactions using PayPal. Yes, PayPal. That minor processing detail aside, the service appears to offer a fun solution for simplifying the fairly painful process of paying the check at group meals, or splitting a tank of gas with a friend. Both you and your bud need to have the app installed before you can beam that green, and there’s no option to send payments remotely, though you could always use plain ole vanilla PayPal for that. The app is free, and if you have a checking account linked you won’t have to deal with any fees. Bump Pay is iOS only “at launch” (read: it could be making its way to Android as well), so for now you’ll need to bump the App Store to get folks paid.

Bump Pay lets you tap a friend for cash originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 30 Mar 2012 03:22:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Late-night poll: How much internal storage is enough?

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News

Internal storage

Since the Samsung Nexus S, phones shipping without an external SDcard slot have caused controversy. We've got a trio of new phones right around the corner from HTC that are shipping without. We hear, and understand, both sides of the issue. Not everyone wants to stream and use cloud services, so they need the flexibility that a huge amount of storage can give. On that note, if manufacturers want to get rid of the SDcard, they need to give people enough internal storage. Which leads us to tonight's poll.

How much is enough? I'm all in the cloud, and it's too late for me to turn back. I get by fine with 16GB, and could probably never miss a beat with only 8GB. Many of you are the opposite — don't care for the cloud and want to store their stuff on their device. They need a lot more storage than I do. Where do you fall? Let us know in tonight's poll.

realDIYmate: Wi-Fi connected characters made with papercraft

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News

realdiymate

Mixing paper and electronics seems to be the new in thing at Kickstarter. A few days ago we saw the cardboard Berlin Boombox, and now we have the reaDIYmate (pronounced “readymate”), a series of programmable papercraft pals with Wi-Fi connectivity. You can assemble them in 10 minutes or so, and they come in two parts: a moving paper “body” with a motor and a speaker inside, and a computer “brain” with a button, 2GB flash memory and a Wi-Fi radio. There are two main body types, the Paper Toys and the Kinetic Sculptures, and both come in a variety of styles from artists and designers.

Once the reaDIYmate is hooked up online via a simple web interface, you can program them to do all kinds of things — play an MP3 when you get a Twitter or…

Sprint rumored to launch HTC One X as the EVO One

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News

Reports last week indicated that Sprint would launch a smartphone code-named the HTC Jet on June 10th. The handset was a variant of HTC’s One X and would launch nearly two years after Sprint’s iconic HTC EVO 4G, the carrier’s first WiMAX-enabled smartphone. New information from AndroidCentral, however, claims that the device will be called the HTC EVO One and is slated for a June 6th release. The EVO One is equipped with a 4.7-inch 720p AMOLED display and a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, the same CPU found in AT&T’s upcoming version of the One X. The handset will also supposedly feature a 2,650 mAh non-removable battery, 16GB of internal storage, a microSD slot, an 8-megapixel rear and 2.0-megapixel front facing camera, LTE connectivity, Beats Audio and Sense 4.0 atop Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The EVO One is reportedly black and red, and it comes with a kickstand similar to the one found on the original EVO. HTC and Sprint are holding a joint press event on April 4th at 5:30 p.m, and we will be on hand to deliver all the news as it breaks.

Vint Cerf comes down hard on the EU’s proposed ‘right to be forgotten’ policy

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News

While Vint Cerf is in the UK attending the launch of the Life Online, a museum exhibit that celebrates the origins of the internet, he’s taking the time to voice his concern over what he sees as a threat to the connected world. Cerf, who is often credited as the father of the internet, tells The Telegraph that the European Union’s proposed “right to be forgotten” policy is unachievable, citing how easy it is for people to copy information from the internet to their computers, and then re-upload it later. He also notes that our world is already based on the idea that once something is published — a book or a newspaper, for instance — it can’t easily be retracted. Cerf believes this should hold true for digital content, and he equates…

Verizon CEO teases cable TV for mobile phones, if SpectrumCo deal goes through

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News

verizon_comcast_van

Verizon is very keen on getting public support for its proposed $3.6 billion purchase of wireless spectrum from Comcast, Bright House and Time Warner Cable, and today CEO Lowell McAdam is suggesting to that same public that a mobile television service could help sweeten the deal. He told The Wall Street Journal that if the purchase is approved, the cable operators could team up with Verizon to provide an “integrated” mobile TV deal “in time for the holidays.” What’s more, McAdam told the Journal that this particular arrangement might open up an option that cable customers have been requesting for a long time: the ability to pick and choose which channels they want with a la carte pricing.

“Most content providers realize that the number…

‘Nokia TV’ Windows Phone app rumored for Lumia handsets

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News

nokiatv

WP7forum.ru claims to the have leaked screenshots of an unannounced Windows Phone 7 app called “Nokia TV.” The app, which would be a likely candidate for the company’s Lumia line, will apparently allow users to search content archives from various local networks, stream shows over Wi-Fi or cellular data, download shows for offline viewing, and possibly stream live TV. While the app’s existence is unconfirmed, the alleged screenshots do resemble some of Nokia’s other Windows Phone 7 apps. Specifically, Nokia TV’s background resembles the abstract design also seen in the recently announced Nokia Reading.

Rumor has it that the app will launch first in Finland, with three local stations providing content: YLE, MTV3, and Nelopen. There’s no…

TAT7 iPhone Scuba case lets you take photos underwater, and only that

Published on 03/29/2012 by in News

tat7 iphone scuba case

People into fish photography are evidently willing to go to drastic measures. Following the Olympus OM-D underwater housing that’s more expensive than the camera, here’s a waterproof iPhone case that essentially removes all non-photography functions. TAT7′s $84.95 iPhone Scuba Case is rated to depths of 30 meters (100 feet) and has three mechanical buttons to fire the camera shutter, switch between video and still images, and access the iPhone’s home button. There’s no other way to interact with your phone once the case is on, so you’ll have to set up your camera app before diving in — and make sure you don’t press the home button once you’re beneath the waves. TAT7 says you’ll be able to access voice control and Siri through the case,…

Turn the page: the book on the making of Flipboard

Published on 03/29/2012 by in News

Craig Mod's Flipboard for iPhone book cover

Craig Mod is a writer and designer who was one of the team members behind the original Flipboard app for the iPhone. In an essay on his blog, he takes a look at Flipboard for iPhone, a physical book he helped put together that documents the creation of the app. Starting with the first code repository commit message, the book spans almost 10,000 other such code changes, covers hundreds of design iterations, and ends in photos from the team’s launch party. The book is a decidedly physical means of cataloguing the process of digital creativity, and if you’re interested in the artistic process in any of its forms, Mod’s thoughtful essay is most certainly worth exploring.
