Sprint won’t launch any new WiMAX devices, exec confirms

Published on 03/29/2012 by in News

While speaking at the Competitive Carriers Global Expo, Sprint’s senior vice president of networks Bob Azzi said that while the company has experienced success with its WiMAX handsets, it will not launch any additional WiMAX devices. The announcement comes after Sprint previously confirmed that it would continue to offer 4G WiMAX devices through 2012 and support the service through 2015. Instead, the company plans to focus on its Network Vision project and upcoming 4G LTE netowrk, Fierce Wireless reported on Thursday. “We are wrapping up final field integration tests,” Azzi said. “The technology works and delivers more benefits than we expected.” The executive noted that the company’s Network Vision project will result in a 50% reduction in cost-per-gigabyte to deliver data and cost-per-minute to deliver voice. “This is a huge benefit to us,” he said, adding that there are between 5,000 to 6,000 people devoted to the project, which is slated to be completed by the end of 2013.

Chevy GogoLink app brings smartphone-powered navigation to Sonic and Spark vehicles

Published on 03/29/2012 by in News

Chevy GogoLink Promo Image 640

Discrete in-vehicle GPS systems seem increasingly redundant when most smartphones can perform similar functionality. It’s something that Chevrolet is banking on with GogoLink, a new navigation app that will add in-car navigation to upcoming models of the company’s Sonic and Spark vehicle lines. The app depends on Chevrolet’s MyLink system which allows a user to connect their smartphone via Bluetooth or USB to their stereo system to access photos, video, and music, as well as make and receive phone calls. GogoLink uses your phone’s data connection and GPS to provide maps, local search, and live traffic information directly to your dashboard. The app also features the ability to store maps offline, allowing you access to turn-by-turn…

WSJ: Google To Open Online Store This Year, Will Sell Tablets Independently Of Retailers (Perhaps With The Launch Of Jellybean)

Published on 03/29/2012 by in News

Nexus-tabletA report from the Wall Street Journal offers new details on Google’s expected shift in Android tablet strategy, and it’s reportedly much more than a single Nexus tablet. The move is being likened to the Nexus One launch, with Google at the center of the distribution and support system for a line of branded tablets. The Nexus One might have been too much for Google to handle, but the search giant is apparently moving full speed ahead this go around, which includes plans to open its own online store where it will sell the rumored tablet line.

Verizon’s CEO has a plan for wireless pay-TV, if the government will allow it

Published on 03/29/2012 by in News

Verizon CEO Lowell C. McAdam doesn’t quite have all of those SpectrumCo AWS licenses in his pocket just yet, but if he does get them he has a decidedly old school idea of what to flood the airwaves with: TV. The Wall Street Journal quotes him saying Verizon and its new cable friends could have “the beginnings of an integrated offering” out by the holidays, so pay-TV customers could watch video on their mobile devices. Even though many of the TV services are already streaming video to tablets, PCs and phones, currently most subscription services are limited to the space of the home’s WiFi network, unlike the video on-demand seen above. According to McAdam the potential to negotiate rights for outside the home streaming and even busting open the bundles for à la carte programming exist — provided the FCC and DOJ allow Verizon to complete the proposed $3.9 billion purchase. Of course, consumption based billing would still be on the table, so don’t start planning your streaming schedule just yet. For now we’ll wait and see if the pros of this arrangement outweigh the cons (and how its Redbox play is mixed up in this), or if the pie-in-the-sky NowTV-style elements of the plan are merely being floated to get the deal done.

Lunar photos from NASA orbiter offer glimpse at remnants of the Space Race

Published on 03/29/2012 by in News

Luna

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is currently in the midst of a mission to gather detailed 3D imagery of the moon’s surface. As part of the ongoing journey, the LRO is getting a good look at vintage Soviet Union “Luna” spacecraft that have been resting on lunar soil since the fiercely competitive Space Race era. These high-resolution images have also given credence to longstanding (but heretofore unconfirmed) theories that scientists believe explain some of the USSR’s ill-fated solar projects. For instance, Luna 23 was a mission shrouded in mystery after a malfunction resulted in the unmanned craft roughly landing on the moon in 1974. LRO photos reveal that Luna 23 fell on its side during the incident, crippling the Soviet effort….

Nearly 1 billion smart connected devices shipped in 2011

Published on 03/29/2012 by in News

The International Data Corporation on Wednesday announced that shipments of smart connected devices —including PCs, tablets and smartphones — reached 916 million units and surpassed $489 billion in revenue in 2011. “Whether it’s consumers looking for a phone that can tap into several robust ‘app’ ecosystems, businesses looking at deploying tablet devices into their environments, or educational institutions working to update their school’s computer labs, smart, connected, compute-capable devices are playing an increasingly important role in nearly every individual’s life,” said Bob O’Donnell, vice president of Clients and Displays at IDC. The firm estimates that worldwide shipments of smart connected devices will top 1.1 billion in 2012 and double to 1.84 billion by 2016. IDC’s numbers represent a compound annual growth rate of 15.4% over the next five years. The firm also predicts that the number of Android-powered devices running on ARM CPUs will grow from 29.4% in 2011 to a market-leading 31.1% share in 2016. Apple’s iOS-based devices, on the other hand, are estimated to grow from 14.6% share in 2011 to 17.3% in 2016. IDC’s press release can be found after the break.

Nearly 1 Billion Smart Connected Devices Shipped in 2011 with Shipments Expected to Double by 2016, According to IDC

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The universe of smart connected devices, including PCs, media tablets, and smartphones, saw shipments of more than 916 million units and revenues surpassing $489 billion dollars in 2011, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC). These numbers reflect the combined total from IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker, Mobile Phone Tracker, and Media Tablet Tracker.

“Whether it’s consumers looking for a phone that can tap into several robust ‘app’ ecosystems, businesses looking at deploying tablet devices into their environments, or educational institutions working to update their school’s computer labs, smart, connected, compute-capable devices are playing an increasingly important role in nearly every individual’s life,” said Bob O’Donnell, vice president, Clients and Displays at IDC.

Looking ahead, unit shipments for smart connected devices should top 1.1 billion worldwide in 2012. By 2016, IDC predicts shipments will reach 1.84 billion units, more than double the 2011 figure, as consumers and business of all shapes and sizes around the world are showing a nearly insatiable appetite for smart connected devices. This works out to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.4% for the five-year forecast period.

A graphic illustrating the size and composition of the worldwide smart connected device market for the 2010-2016 forecast period is available at IDC.com. Instructions to embed the graphic into online news articles and social media can be found by viewing this press release on IDC.com.

In terms of platforms, IDC expects a relatively dramatic shift between 2011 and 2016, with the once-dominant Windows on x86 platform, consisting of PCs running the Windows operating system on any x86-compatible CPU, slipping from a leading 35.9% share in 2011 down to 25.1% in 2016. The number of Android-based devices running on ARM CPUs, on the other hand, will grow modestly from 29.4% share in 2011 to a market-leading 31.1% share in 2016. Meanwhile, iOS-based devices will grow from 14.6% share in 2011 to 17.3% in 2016.

“Android’s growth is tied directly to the propagation of lower-priced devices,” said Tom Mainelli, research director, Mobile Connected Devices. “So, while we expect dozens of hardware vendors to own some share in the Android market, many will find profitability difficult to sustain. Similarly, we expect a large percentage of application developers to continue to focus their efforts on iOS, despite the platform’s smaller overall market share, because iOS end users have proven more willing to pay for high-quality apps.”

Research conducted by IDC suggests that many individuals own and regularly use multiple smart connected devices. “We are in the multi-device age,” continued O’Donnell, “and we believe the number of people who use multiple devices will only continue to increase. The trick, moving forward, will be to integrate all these devices into a unified whole through use of personal cloud-type applications and services. That’s the real challenge of what we have often called the ‘PC Plus’ era.”

“Smartphone growth will be driven by Asia/Pacific countries, especially China, where mobile operators are subsidizing the purchase of 3G smartphones, thus increasing the total addressable market. In many if not all instances, the smartphone will be the primary connection to the Internet,” said Will Stofega, program director, Mobile Phone Technologies and Trends. “In countries where devices are not subsidized by the mobile operators, competitive and component-based pricing will help drive volume.”

‘The Fourth Dimension’ for iOS: learn to see in 4D (hands-on)

Published on 03/29/2012 by in News

the fourth dimension

The Fourth Dimension is a new app for iPhone and iPad that has a slightly loftier goal than most: it seeks to help its users perceive another plane of existence. The app takes the form of a short interactive book and lets you play around with onscreen objects to glean an understanding of four dimensional geometry. It’s conversationally written without the slightest hint of jargon, despite the complexity of the subject on hand, and by the time you’re done you’ll likely feel like you’ve learned something. Even if you’re not sure entirely what.

We see the world in three dimensions, so the abstract concept of a fourth is a really difficult thing to explain — textbook chapters or even Wikipedia pages with animated GIFs don’t quite cut it…

AT&T HTC One X release date moved to May 6, Best Buy tells customer in e-mail

Published on 03/29/2012 by in News

Best Buy e-mail HTC One X

Folks in the U.S. are waiting with bated breath for a release date of the HTC One X on AT&T. And while we need to stress that nothing's official until AT&T says it is, Best Buy apparently has sent at least one customer an e-mail saying the release date for a preordered One X has changed to May  6, 2012. The e-mail also gives us a SKU (that's stock-keeping unit — an internal ID number for retail products) for the AT&T One X, but a quick trip to Best Buy's site comes up negative on that front. (You've been able to preorder in stores, though.)  It's possible that Best Buy just got a little ahead of itself here, and we're told no initial release date was given when the One X was preordered. Here's to hoping we hear from AT&T soon.
