Canada to retire the penny

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News

Canadian penny

Physical currency is one of the oldest forms of human technology still in use today, and the lowly penny still sits in pockets alongside high-tech forms of printed money and electronic forms of payment — but Canada’s 2012 federal budget will eliminate production of the penny starting this fall in order to save costs. The budget claims that the coin is a “burden to the economy,” as it it costs the Canadian government 1.6 cents to produce each penny — and Canada estimates that it will save about $11 million a year with its elimination. Canada joins a growing number of countries in sacking the penny, including Sweden, New Zealand, Mexico, Australia, Israel, Brazil, and others, and the penny debate is currently ongoing in the US.

Foxconn workers react to reduced hours, same pay

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News

In response to one of the largest investigations ever conducted of a U.S. company’s foreign partners, Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn has agreed to hire tens of thousands of new workers, eliminate illegal overtime, improve safety condition and upgrade workers’ housing and other amenities, Reuters reported on Friday. After probing three Foxconn plants and interviewing over 35,000 workers, the Fair Labor Association reported that it found serious violations of Chinese labor laws, such as illegal and unpaid overtime, and extreme hours. Foxconn plans to reduce workers’ hours to 49 per week, which includes overtime, and it does not plan to raise salaries. The company will also hire additional workers and build more housing and canteens to combat overcrowding. While some of the company’s efforts have been praised, the changes have received mixed reactions from Foxconn’s employees. Read on for more.

Chen Yamei, a 25 year old worker who has been at a Foxconn for four years, complained that her salary will drop from 4,000 yuan a month to just over 2,000 yuan, roughly $317. “We are here to work and not to play,” she told Reuters. “Our income is very important.” Another worker had a different opinion on the matter, though. “Working here is just so-so. Working conditions and the pay are all right,” said 20 year old Li Wei, who has worked at the Foxconn factory for about a year. “However there are around 100,000 people in there, so sometimes the feeling can be oppressive,” Li said.

When 23-year-old Foxconn worker Wu Jun heard the news about working hours, she was filled with worry rather than joy. “We are worried we will have less money to spend. Of course, if we work less overtime, it would mean less money,” she said.

48% of employees said that their working hours were reasonable, 34% wanted to work more to increase pay and only 18% said their hours were too long, Bloomberg reported. 91% of employees polled said there was no need for more rest days, and 94% saw no need to change shift arrangements.

Pocket Legends Turns 2! Spacetime Studios Celebrates With Free Content And Party Hats

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News

The immensely popular MMO Pocket Legends is turning two and Spacetime Studios is throwing a celebration to honor all of its milestones and devoted fan base. The now cross-platform global hit, Pocket Legends, was originally launched on iOS April 3rd, 2010. Since then, Pocket Legends has been played in every country on the planet (with the exceptions of Cuba and North Korea) by over five million people. That’s an impressive feat for a mobile MMO! Spacetime Studios thinks so too, that’s why players will now have access to all Pocket Legends premium content areas for free!

That’s right, players will now have free access to such PvE campaigns as:

  • Sandstone Caves
  • Skeller’s Return
  • Croc Feud
  • Frozen Nightmares
  • Shadow Caves
  • Wyldwood

For those players who have already purchased these areas, Spacetime Studios would like to show their gratitude with a “Frozen Crown of Gratitude.” This exclusive “Frozen Crown of Gratitude” vanity helm was crafted using the best crystals from Frozen Nightmare’s Frost King. You’ll find this unique item waiting for you in your stash.

Spacetime Studios is also offering up special in-game anniversary party hats that can be purchased throughout the week. If you don’t have the cash, you can always wave at a player wearing one and be rewarded with a mini-version of your own (again, only throughout the week).

This celebration extends well beyond the world of Alterra, stretching across the vast cosmos into the realm of Star Legends: The Blackstar Chronicles. Players of Star Legends will be able to honor their past with Bear, Bird and Elf “Bobble Head” masks that can be purchased in the Star Legends store.

So put on your party hats, have some fun, and wish one of our all-time favorite mobile MMOs a happy birthday. Happy Birthday Pocket Legends!

HTC ‘Droid Incredible 4G’ appears in Verizon internal screen

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News

Droid Incredible 4G

The "Droid Incredible 4G" name has appeared a couple of times over the past few months, suggesting the imminent arrival of a new entry in HTC and Big Red's Droid Incredible series. Back in February we even got our first look at what seems to be a Droid Incredible-like device with Verizon 4G LTE connectivity.

Today there's even more evidence to suggest that a new Dinc may be on the way. A Verizon internal document sent to us by a tipster references the HTC Droid Incredible 4G and its model number, ADR6410. There's also some slightly less interesting stuff about MAP (minimum advertised price) policy, though no specific prices to speak of at this stage.

With the HTC One X and One S coming to Europe in the next week, and a U.S. launch likely within the next month, it makes sense for Verizon to get its own next-gen HTC handset in the near future. Purported specs include a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM and an 8MP shooter. Like the One S, the display is said to be AMOLED-based rather than One X's SLCD2. On the software side, we'd expect to see Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 4.0.

Sounds a lot like a 4G LTE version of the One S to us. Verizon people, be sure to drop by the comments and let us know if you're tempted.

Thanks, Anon!

Update to T-Mobile’s My Account app brings ads to the Android notification area

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News

Blaze 4G s1200

All the major carriers have smartphone apps for managing your account, and they’re generally boring but useful tools for checking your balance or paying your bill. However, a recent update to the T-Mobile My Account app for Android has added advertisements into Android notification area. A number of users have taken to T-Mobile’s forums and the app’s page in the Google Play store to complain about these ads, though its worth noting that they appear to be for T-Mobile promotions only — there’s no evidence yet that T-Mobile is selling out the space in your notification bar to third-party companies. Of course, T-Mobile is far from the first to do this — plenty of game publishers (like EA) sneak ads into the iOS Notification Center if…

DoubleTwist adds Google Music support, gets an alarm clock app

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News
DoubleTwist Alarm Clock

DoubleTwist is certainly still one of the better music management options for Android, and it just keeps improving. Two days ago the player app got an update and now it can hook into Google Music, though, it only recognizes songs that you’ve checked for offline access from within the Google app. An unfortunate restriction, but at least your tracks don’t disappear into the ether if you prefer to play back your tunes via DoubleTwist. There’s also new functionality coming to what is now less an app than an ecosystem, thanks to the just released DoubleTwist Alarm Clock. The functionality is pretty much what you’d expect — set a time and pick a song from your DoubleTwist library to gently rouse you from your slumber (or kick your butt out of bed). The Alarm Clock is just $0.99 in the Play Market right now for the first 10,000 customers. After that it’ll go up to $1.99. So don’t waste any time, go download it now.

iPad tantrum: why kids are so glued to their gadgets

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News

ipad screen

While smartphones and tablets occupy a good chunk of our waking lives, for most of us they’re still relatively new — we didn’t grow up with an iPhone in hand. But that’s not the case for kids growing up today. It’s something that Dave Pell noticed when he started having trouble getting his five-year-old to put down an iPad, until he realized that his son is likely just emulating his behavior. “My son was born around the time of the original iPhone,” he explains. “So I’ve been asking him to ‘just give me a second’ for his whole life.” But Pell is still hopeful, explaining that as parents deal with these kinds of issues, they might just realize the problems with their own behavior. Be sure to hit the source link below for his full…

The Vergecast 024 – 03.30.2012

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News

Vergecast

This Vergecast addresses the defining question of our era: whose cuisine will reign supreme? Will BlackBerry, the besmirched Team Jacob / Lil Kim / Team Gale of the blogosphere, rise up against shining favorite Apple, the Team Peeta / Nicki Minaj / Team Edward of the entire universe? Or will both contenders be felled by Google, the arena’s Volturi / Universal Music Group / Capitol? SPOILER ALERT: Joanna Stern smokes them all with a company-issued Lumia 9000, and it’s a Vergecast.

Readability tweaks sharing feature in response to copyright theft accusations

Published on 03/30/2012 by in News

Readability Android app (use this one)

Readability’s changing how its sharing features work today, in response to criticism that the service doesn’t properly attribute original sources. This morning AppAdvice accused Readability of “sinister behavior” regarding the way its apps for Android and iOS share links. In contrast to rival services, which share articles by way of a link to the original article, Readability’s apps shared a link to a formatted article on its own servers, raising some interesting issues on attribution. Says AppAdvice:
