Mozilla shows off ported version of Unreal Engine 3 in Firefox browser [video]

Published on 05/03/2013 by in News

Mozilla is out to show that it wasn’t just blowing smoke when it said it wanted to bring console-quality games directly to your web browser. Per Engadget, Mozilla has posted a demonstration video of Android game Epic Citadel that’s been ported over to Firefox using the Unreal Engine 3. While the video is just a straight scenic walk-through with no combat or interaction with non-player characters, it does show that it’s possible to have high-quality graphics run at a solid frame rate of 16 frames per second within a desktop browser. The Unreal Engine 3 is used to power such A-list games as Bioshock Infinite, Mass Effect 3 and Batman: Arkham City, and porting it to a browser would be a

Mozilla won’t bring Firefox to iOS until Apple changes default browser policies

Published on 03/11/2013 by in News

iPhone users who miss having Firefox on their devices shouldn’t get their hopes up that it will arrive anytime soon. CNET reports that Mozilla vice president of product Jay Sullivan told a panel at South by Southwest this weekend that the organization would not design any new versions of Firefox for iOS until Apple (AAPL) allows users to set it as their default browser and allows Mozilla “to carry over its sophisticated rendering and javascript engines to iOS.” The issue for Mozilla, as CNET reports, is that it “doesn’t feel like it can build the browser it wants to for Apple’s platform.” The tricky thing for Mozilla, however, is that there doesn’t seem to be all that much demand at

Firefox OS is repeating the mistakes of others and hoping for a different outcome

Published on 03/01/2013 by in News

I feel bad for Mozilla, I really do. Competitors and the march of time are closing in quicker than it can raise its defenses. Her crown jewel, Firefox, is feeling the squeeze as Chrome encroaches on its hard-won territory and mobile offensives have p…

Twitter announces support for Firefox OS, app to be in Firefox Marketplace when devices ship

Published on 02/25/2013 by in News

Twitter for Firefox OS

Twitter has announced that they will be among the first marquee applications to support Firefox OS. Mozilla announced yesterday that Firefox has committed mobile operators in 18 markets, and that Alcatel, ZTE, and Huawei are partnered to build devices for the new OS.

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

The interface they are showing looks very much like the Android app, and Twitter says the application offers a rich experience, and is easy to use. In addition to the standard functions, Twitter plans to take advantage of Firefox OS’ unique Web Activity feature, and users will be able to tweet out from any app that supports them.

Sony Mobile has ‘an ambition’ to launch Firefox OS device in 2014

Sony Mobile has 'an ambition' to launch Firefox OS device in 2014

Despite what your feelings may be about Firefox OS, various OEMs and carriers are clearly content with having more options to explore. The latest outfit appears to be Sony’s Mobile entity, which, earlier today, announced it had reached a multi-year deal with Telefónica that will “explore the development” of a device running Mozilla’s novel operating system. What’s more, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Head of Products Business Group, Bob Ishida, says Sony Mobile engineers are already working on a project with the new mobile OS on the block, adding that the eventual goal is to “bring a product to market in 2014.” Now, whether we’ll see higher-end slabs than some of the ones we’ve experienced thus far, well, dear readers, that remains to be seen.
