Cydia-style app store for Android coming soon

Google’s open approach with the Android platform means developers can build applications that make use of parts of the operating system that iOS developers can’t even consider if they hope to get their apps approved for distribution through Apple’s App Store. Even still, however, there are a number of Android developers with apps that have been banned from Google’s Android Market for various reasons. While iOS developers looking to get around Apple’s strict policies can turn to Cydia, the third-party app store available to jailbreakers, Android developers with banned apps do not have a centralized location through which they can distribute their wares — but that will soon change. Android developer Koushik Dutta recently revealed that he is working on a third-party

ASUS promises Transformer Android 4.0 update in ‘mid-February’

ASUS’s entry into the Android tablet world was reportedly a success. The Eee Pad Transformer was fast, unique, and it was among the most popular Android tablets to launch last year. The Transformer was one of the first to feature a unique dock that transformed the device into a netbook. For months the Transformer was on back order, with sales far exceeding ASUS’s original estimates. Even though the tablet is now considered “last year’s technology,” there isn’t much holding it back, except one thing — Ice Cream Sandwich. The original Transformer is still running Google’s buggy and unexciting Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system, but ASUS has taken to the company’s Facebook page and assured users an update is coming. Google is

Android to overtake iOS and become the top mobile platform for developers

Over the next 12 months, Google’s Android operating system will become the favorite platform among mobile developers, according to research firm Ovum. Nearly all developers, however, will support both mobile platforms. While Apple’s iOS and Android have long been the favorites, Ovum said there is growing developer interest in both Windows Phone and BlackBerry operating systems. “The growing momentum behind Windows Phone indicates that Microsoft has managed to convince developers that its platform is worthy of investment; its challenge now is to persuade consumers,” said Ovum analyst Adam Leach. The research also showed that developers are moving away from traditional mobile development applications such as Java and Flash. Developers are instead focusing their efforts on the web-based HTML5 standard, which is becoming

KDDI putting ads in the notification bar on Android phones
