Upcoming title Arma Tactics makes us want Project Shield even more

Published on 04/12/2013 by in News

Project Shield

Polish up your battlefield command with Arma Tactics, coming soon to Google Play

We’re all patiently waiting for the release of NVIDIA’s Project Shield, but seeing things like today’s mention of the new game Arma Tactics makes it seem like a long wait. It looks very much like a typical combat squad game on a console or the PC, including the incredible graphics and fine-tuned controls.

You lead your squad through close combat, with random missions and an endless variety of tactics can be used to finish them. Some of us would go the stealthy route and snipe the enemy, while others can rush in with barrels blazing. Either way sounds pretty damn awesome right now.

NVIDIA promises Arma Tactics to be “one of the best looking mobile games to date.” The video certainly appears that way. Tegra 4 enhancements like complex textures and physics, or environmental effects (check out the smoke in the video) have really got me itching to play this one on the new hardware.

NVIDIA says Arma Tactics is coming soon to Google Play, in the meantime hit the break and watch the video.

Latest Project Shield demo from Nvidia shows off Riptide GP 2, looks insane

Published on 03/08/2013 by in News

Riptide GP is somewhat of a favorite among the Android Central staff. Its excellent graphics, combined with superb controls and a great pick up and play approach make it to this day one of Android’s finest game titles. We don’t need to tell you that we’re eagerly awaiting Nvidia’s Tegra 4 platform, and with it the follow up title, Riptide GP 2. Thankfully, to help keep us going in the meantime, Nvidia’s latest Android Thursday video shows off the new game running on Project Shield

And it looks; amazing. Besides showing off the gameplay, Nvidia also talks us through some of the special graphical touches that have been brought to the table thanks to Tegra 4. We’re talking enhanced water effects, motion blur, improved reflection shaders, all designed to immerse the gamers ever further.

Gameplay wise looks like a continuation from the original — no bad thing. There’s some pretty sweet looking tricks too like the Superman and something called a Nak Nak — right? — to perform. Combined with Project Shield, Riptide 2 looks like an absolute blast. Naturally we’re excited for both, but we’ll take Riptide 2 on anything that’ll play it at this point.

Real Boxing on Project Shield looks like a knock-out

Published on 02/08/2013 by in News

Real Boxing

NVIDIA has posted another Project Shield teaser, this time showing off the controls of the clamshell playing Real Boxing — an unreleased title for the Tegra platform.

Real Boxing looks like a smash hit in the making. A full career mode, mini-games to build your character, and action inside the ring filled with blood are the keys to a great boxing game, and Real Boxing has all this and more. Since it’ designed for the Tegra 4, you’ll have extra texture packs, better physics, more polygons, and everything else that comes along with NVIDIA sponsored games. I’m a sucker for boxing titles, and I cant wait for this one.

Having a built-in controller for games like Real Boxing should really take things to the next level of fun. Android, and quite a few games support external controllers, but I’ve found this can often be a bit janky and require a lot of setup to get things working. Having the controller as part of the device, and titles made especially for use with it, should allow us to throw all the left hooks and upper cuts we can handle.

There’s a video after the break, be sure to have a look — especially if you’re a fan of boxing games like I am.

Eyes-on Nvidia Project Shield

Published on 01/08/2013 by in News

NVIDIA’s Project Shield

Published on 01/07/2013 by in News

Shield

It’s the big thing from CES 2013 so far, and what everyone is talking about. Imagine a 7-inch LCD (that’s “retina spec” for what that is worth) and a nicely built game pad linked together into a futuristic looking clamshell case. That would be NVIDIA’s Project Shield.

Android Central @ CES

Running Android Jelly Bean, and paired with the all new Tegra 4 processor, this thing was built to do one thing really well — play games. Because it’s Android — stock Android — it will run just about every app from Google Play, but Project Shield has another secret weapon. Using a new streaming gaming service, it can play games on your computer (with a compliant NVIDIA GeForce GPU) streamed to any screen that has an HDMI input.

There’s also a switch to shut all this off, and have it act just like any other 7-inch Android tablet, as it has a multi touch capable display. Mix all this together and you have one of the most unique convergent devices we’ve ever seen. This is one to keep your eyes on, folks!

Hands on with NVIDIA’s ‘Project Shield’

Published on 01/07/2013 by in News

NVIDIA Project Shield.

Android Central @ CESWe get our first look at NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 processor, and the future of Android gaming

It’s hard not to get excited about NVIDIA’s “Project Shield,” the Android-based hand-held gaming system it unveiled this week at CES in Los Vegas. For one, it’s really the biggest piece of news thus far. And for another — it’s just friggin’ cool. NVIDIA has taken the traditional gaming-style controller, packed its brand-new Tegra 4 system inside of it, added a 5-inch, clamshell 720p display (NVIDIA’s calling it “retinal”) and added some truly astonishing gameplay. Consider:

  • It’s running a relatively stock user interface. The nerds love that.
  • It runs any Android app. If it works on a phone or tablet now, it should work on Project Shield.
  • There’s one-touch access to NVIDIA’s “Tegra Zone,” a curated section of Android applications tweaked specifically for NVIDIA’s processors.
  • Steam. If you play a game on Steam, you can play it here, too.
  • PC gaming. NVIDIA’s been showing off this tech for some time now, and it’s really dialed in here. Your gaming rig does the heavy lifting, beaming the video to Project Shield, which also serves as the controller.

It’s not without some hurdles in the way of success (what is), but, yeah. We’re excited.
