Sprint won’t launch any new WiMAX devices, exec confirms
While speaking at the Competitive Carriers Global Expo, Sprint’s senior vice president of networks Bob Azzi said that while the company has experienced success with its WiMAX handsets, it will not launch any additional WiMAX devices. The announcement comes after Sprint previously confirmed that it would continue to offer 4G WiMAX devices through 2012 and support the service through 2015. The International Data Corporation on Wednesday announced that shipments of smart connected devices —including PCs, tablets and smartphones — reached 916 million units and surpassed $489 billion in revenue in 2011. “Whether it’s consumers looking for a phone that can tap into several robust ‘app’ ecosystems, businesses looking at deploying tablet devices into their environments, or educational institutions working to update their school’s computer labs, smart, connected, compute-capable devices are playing an increasingly important role in nearly every individual’s life,” said Bob O’Donnell, vice president of Clients and Displays at IDC. Following rumors of a $199 Google-branded tablet, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said he believes that more Tegra 3-powered tablets will be coming to the market this summer at the same low price. By removing things like expensive memory, a $199 tablet is quite feasible, Huang said. Amazon’s immensely popular Kindle Fire tablet — which shipped with just 8GB of storage and no cameras — is available at the $199 price point and managed to capture 14% of the tablet market in its debut quarter.
